The name

What “Soyo” means

逍遙

Xiāo Yáo · Soyo in Korean

“A way of life — wandering freely and discovering unexpected joy.”

逍遙 is a concept from Zhuangzi (莊子), the ancient Daoist philosopher who lived around the 4th century BCE. His opening chapter — 逍遙遊, “Free and Easy Wandering” — argues that the most fulfilling life is one spent in unhurried movement through the world, paying attention to what shows up.

Read aloud in Korean, the same two characters become “Soyo.” The name is the philosophy: explore without a fixed plan, and let the good moments find you.

Why we built it

The community is already here.
The platform wasn't.

Local communities don't lack passion — they lack a home. Today, event posts live on Instagram, RSVPs on Meetup, payments on e-transfer, attendee lists in scattered spreadsheets. Organizers juggle all of it. Venues never quite know who's coming. And the people who'd most love to show up never hear about it.

Soyo brings the whole loop into one place: discover venues, connect with organizers, propose events, accept RSVPs, get paid. We don't want to replace the community — we want to make running one feel as light as the philosophy our name comes from.

Where we are

Starting in Metro Vancouver

Soyo's first chapter is in Metro Vancouver, BC — a city full of creative spaces, language exchanges, supper clubs, walking groups, and a hundred quieter rituals that make a neighbourhood feel like home. We're launching alongside founding venue partners across Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, and beyond.

Our long-term vision is bigger: an exploration platform that travels with you. Whether you're in Vancouver next weekend or Seoul next year, opening Soyo should mean opening a door to the small, specific, local thing happening near you.
